Global average temperatures continue to rise above pre-industrial levels. In March of this year the World Meteorological Organization confirmed that 2023 was the warmest year on record, with the global average near-surface temperature at 1.45 Ā°Celsius above the pre-industrial baseline. It was also the warmest ten-year period on record. The toll on public health from extreme heat is likely to be one of the largest costs of climate change.

Michael Greenstone is the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics and Director of the Becker Friedman Institute and Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago. He also serves as co-director of the Climate Impact Lab, a multi-disciplinary collaboration of researchers working to quantify the long-term impacts of climate change. Dr. Greenstone's research focuses on estimating the costs and benefits of societiesā energy and environmental choices.
